The content of the course concerns Biotechnology, which includes all the technologies that are used by various organizations in order to produce various products for the benefit of humans. It refers to all fields of Biotechnology with an emphasis on the applications of Medicine and Pharmaceutical Biotechnology. The aim of the course is for students to become familiar with the technological advances of modern Biotechnology that are related to their specialty and the science of Medicine, as well as other applications that concern human beings in general. Moreover, students should be able able to think critically on the ways they use biotechnological methods in order to deal with contemporary problems.
Course Outline
Upon completion of the course, students will have obtained knowledge on:
- the basic principles of genetic modification of cells or whole organisms for production of food and medicine products
- the importance of using stem cells in new therapies
- the principles of gene therapy
- the latest biotechnological techniques (such as Nanobiotechnology) which are applicable to diagnosis or treatment
