The content of the course refers to the science of Molecular Biology, which studies the principles and mechanisms of the structure, preservation and the expression of genome. Emphasis is placed upon eukaryotic and prokaryotic organisms, while at the same time relevant mechanisms that are observed in the genetic material of viruses and bacteriophages are being analyzed. The objective of the course is to familiarize students with the basic principles and methods of Molecular Biology that are used in research laboratories as well as research protocols.
Course Outline
Upon completion of the course the students will be able to understand:
The structure, the properties, and functions of nucleic acids (DNA and RNA)
The recombinant DNA technology and the techniques used
The concept and the applications of cloning.
The hybridization of nucleic acids and the molecular biology techniques used.
The methods of identifying of DNA sequencing.
Polymerase Chain Reaction (PRC) and its application.
Real time Polymerase Chain Reaction (real time PCR) and its application.
The mechanisms of genetic information. DNA replication -Protein synthesis.
Data of gene expression, the control mechanisms of expression, as well as the methods used for its study.
Data on genetically modified microorganisms and genetic modification.
