The course provides an introduction to the study of the immune system of the human organism. The lectures refer to the structure, the function and the molecular genetics, including antibodies, receptors T and B lymphocytes, major histocompatibility complex (MHC) and cytokines, as well as lymphocyte development and activating factors. Moreover, the ways the antigens are connected with the antigen presenting cells are being described and students are introduced to different kinds of immune response against bacterial infections, viruses, fungi, protozoa and helminths. Furthermore, the basic principles of immunization and immunodeficiency, immune tolerance and autoimmune disorders, and tumor immunity are thoroughly explained and emphasis is placed upon recent developments in immunology in order to diagnose and treat them (monoclonal antibodies and recombinant molecules for protective immunity). The aim of the course is for students to understand the function of the immune system and its contribution to the defense and maintenance of homeostasis. Moreover, students will be able to understand the importance of testing for chemical and cellular immune response in order to identify infections as well as primary or acquired immunodeficiency.
