The course aims at introducing students to the principles of Bacteriology and their laboratory and clinical applications. The general characteristics, the structure, the classification, the pathogenic action of bacteria, as well as laboratory diagnosis, epidemiology, treatment, and prevention are thoroughly explained. Moreover, the course includes the fields of genetics of bacteria, their typing and the phylogenetic study of their population.

Course Outline

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to know and understand:
• Basic principles of Bacteriology and the systematic study of bacteria.
• The interactions between bacteria and humans and their consequences as well as the factors that affect the causing and manifestation of disease.
• The basic biological and genetic traits that are involved in their pathology, and their connection with the disease they cause.
• The principles of laboratory diagnosis of bacterial infections, the methods of isolation, cultivation, detection, identification/ typing, as well as the interpretation and evaluation of laboratory findings.
• The sensitivity and resistance in antibiotics mechanisms that will enable them to use proper antibiotics in practice.
 • How to use texts, books and other resources to maximize knowledge through on-going and independent learning.
