The content of the theoretical part of the course aims at students’ comprehension of the ‘microworld’ and its interaction with the ‘macroworld’ and humans. There is an introduction in the advances of Microbiology as well as a historical regression of the most important findings. The variety of microorganisms, the structure and the function of bacterial cells, the cells of eukaryotic microbes and viruses as well as the development of basic genetic systems of bacteria, bacteriophages, plasmids and viruses are being described. The course finishes with an introduction to antibiotics and the genetic base of the mechanisms of bacteria resistance whereas at the same time ways of recording and controlling antimicrobial resistance are being developed.
